2. Ignorance is bliss
If you don’t read the news, you’re uninformed. But if you read the news, you’re disinformed… If you´re on SoMe you get bombarded with news you didn’t even ask for. I may have to take some self-criticism on that last bit, as I became quite engaged in recent events around the world, and shared it quite freely.
That being said, keeping quiet is sometimes the exact thing evil wants you to be, and therefore you may be viewed complicit to a varying degree. You may disagree, but if you walked down the street and saw an adult, bullying a child, would you just turn your back to them and pretend it didn’t happen? If the answer is yes, then we are not the same.
But what happens when you´re force fed news every day that constantly eats away at your soul? And when you start to see patterns on what’s being shared by various newspaper companies, you start seeing that they are completely biased and not independent. “Stop reading the news then” some will say, and I agree. But when you´re on SoMe and the platform is structured to fed content designed to trigger a negative response from the viewer? Because that is exactly how it´s structured. And if you fall into the trap of interacting with it, the algorithm will start directing more and more similar content your way. “Stop interacting with it then!” you´re already shouting at your screen.
The point is it won´t stop it from appearing in your fed.
So, when the entire experience on SoMe just revolves around this, then what’s the point of being there? Well, there isn’t much point to it really. But we are feeding an addiction.
That is when I take my hat, a walk out the door. And as a middle finger to society, I am buying a dumb phone. And yes, you read that correctly. I choose to disconnect from the world wide web, by removing the very thing you always have in your pocket, that keeps you constantly doomscrolling and frying your dopamine receptors.
